Overview
Wastewater treatment protects receiving waters and public health by removing pollutants from used water before it is discharged or reused. Municipal wastewater typically carries organic matter, nutrients, and suspended solids, while industrial effluents may add oils, heavy metals, or chemical oxygen demand that requires dedicated handling.
Treatment progresses through stages: preliminary screening and grit removal, primary settling of solids, secondary biological treatment where microorganisms consume dissolved organics, and tertiary polishing such as nutrient removal, filtration, or disinfection. Industrial plants often add physicochemical steps, dissolved air flotation, chemical precipitation, or advanced oxidation, tailored to the specific effluent.
Sludge produced by the process must itself be managed, and modern designs recover value where possible through biogas capture and biosolids processing. Meeting discharge standards consistently demands robust process control, operator expertise, and instrumentation that tracks influent variability in real time.
The Challenge
Municipal sewage carries organics, nutrients and suspended solids; industrial effluents add oils, heavy metals or high chemical oxygen demand. Discharging either untreated damages receiving waters and public health, while treatment plants themselves must handle flow variation, sludge production and tightening discharge standards.
